Upgrade your electrical safety with our range of RCBOs (residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection). Designed to provide enhanced protection against electric shocks and fires, RCBOs offer peace of mind for homes and businesses alike. Explore our selection today and make the smart choice for electrical safety.
An RCBO (Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent Protection) is an advanced electrical protection device that combines the functionalities of a residual current device (RCD) and a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) into a single unit.
They’re installed within consumer units to monitor electrical circuits to keep them running correctly.
RCBOs continuously monitor the electrical current flowing through a circuit. If they detect an imbalance caused by a fault, such as a leakage to earth or overload, they trip and interrupt the power supply, preventing electric shock or fire hazards.
You’ll need RCBOs in environments where extra protection is needed to protect against electric shocks and fires. This includes residential homes, commercial premises, and industrial facilities.
They are particularly important in areas with high moisture levels or where electrical equipment is near water.
There are three classes of RCBO - type A, B, and C.
Type A RCBOs are mainly used for low-level overcurrents.
Type B RCBOs are used for medium-level overcurrents.
Type C RCBOs are used for high-level overcurrents.
RCBOs are available in a variety of current ratings (e.g., 6A, 10A, 16A, 32A) and sensitivity levels for residual current protection (e.g., 30mA, 100mA).
Additionally, there are options for single-pole, double-pole, and three-pole RCBOs to accommodate different electrical systems.
For home installations, RCBOs with a sensitivity rating of 30mA are recommended.
This level of sensitivity effectively protects against electric shock while minimising the occurrence of nuisance tripping.
While RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and RCBOs protect against electric shock by detecting leakage currents, RCBOs offer the added benefit of overcurrent protection.
This enables them to safeguard electrical circuits against overloads and short circuits, improving overall safety.
An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) provides only residual current protection, whereas an RCBO offers combined protection against residual currents and overcurrents.
The inclusion of overcurrent protection in an RCBO makes it a more comprehensive solution for electrical safety.
RCBOs offer superior protection to MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) as they incorporate residual current and overcurrent protection in a single device.
Having an essentially two-in-one device should simplify installation and help give better safety. This makes RCBOs the preferred choice for most modern electrical installations.
