What Are MR16 Bulbs?

MR16 bulbs, sometimes called GU5.3 light bulbs, are commonly used around the home in downlights. They use multifaceted reflectors that concentrate light beams and project them to the room, creating well-lit environments. MR16 light bulbs can come in various wattage, lumen, and colour temperatures. They’re commonly available as LED lights, providing a low voltage and energy-efficient bulb option suitablefor all kinds of homes. But you can also find them with halogen lights.

Are All MR16 Bulbs 12v?

No, not all MR16 bulbs are 12v. Although MR16 bulbs are interchangeably called GU5.3 light bulbs, this is only fully accurate when they have the GU5.3 base. Some MR16 light bulbs can use the GU10 base. The GU5.3 base uses 12 volts, and the GU10 uses 120 volts.

Can I Replace MR16 Halogen Bulbs With LEDs?

Yes, you can replace MR16 halogen bulbs with LEDs. However, you might have to change your transformer. MR16 halogen bulbs are low voltage, and most power supplies require a minimum 20-watt load. We recommend using an electrician if you need to change any electrical units.

Is MR16 the Same as GU5?

The MR16 light bulb is commonly called a GU5.3 light bulb, as it uses the GU5.3 “push-fit” base with two sharp pins at the bottom. But technically, they’re not the same thing. GU5.3 refers to the cap/base, while the MR16 is the shape of the bulb. Not all MR16 bulbs use the GU5.3 base and can sometimes use the GU10.

Are MR16 Bulbs AC or DC?

MR16 LED bulbs can be either AC or DC. Bulbs with AC are designed to work with existing halogen transformers. But if it’s DC, you’ll need an LED driver when replacing an MR16 halogen bulb with an LED.

Are MR16 Bulbs Being Phased Out?

MR16 halogen bulbs were phased out in 2016 as they didn’t comply with new EU legislation due to the CO2 they produced. You can replace your old halogen bulbs with MR16 LED bulbs.

Are MR16 LED Bulbs Dimmable?

Not all MR16 LED bulbs are dimmable. But there are dimmable options available. However, dimmable MR16 LED bulbs are known to be unreliable compared to the GU10.

Can I Replace MR16 With GU10?

Yes, you can replace MR16 bulbs with GU10. But it can be complicated as you will need to switch the bulb's transformer. We recommend talking to a qualified electrician.

Do MR16 Bulbs Need a Transformer?

MR16 LED bulbs require a step-down transformer from line voltage to 12v AC/DC. They can either use a magnetic or electronic transformer to power the lamp.

What is the Difference Between MR11 and MR16?

There’s a size difference between MR11 and MR16 bulbs. The MR11 is smaller, with a diameter of 35mm. The MR16 has a diameter of 50mm. This means MR11s aren’t as bright as MR16s but allow for smaller holes in ceilings for downlights.
